Define Democracy

-Democracy can be defined as a form of government where the power lies with the people,or population of the country, and is exercised by their representatives.
- Therefore democracy means that the citizens of the country give the government power to rule "on loan"

On which values is South Africa founded on?

-Universal adult suffrage
-A national common voters'roll
-Regular elections
-A multipart system of democratic government, to ensure accountability, responsiveness and openness.

List the 3 forms of democracy

-Representative democracy
-Participatory democracy
-Direct democracy

Representative democracy

-Representative democracy is described in chaper 2 of the Constitution, which contains the bill of rights
-Chapter 2 describes a system for electing government representatives and suggests mandates for those representatives.
- It means that the people of the country can take part in politics through their duly elected representatives.

Participatory democracy

-Participatory democracy means that individuals and institutions must get the opportunity to tak part in decision making related to issues that affect them.
-Participatory democracy occurs when individuals or institutions submit comments on proposed legislation that is due to go to parliment for consideration.

Direct Democracy

- Direct Democracy enables the electorate to contribute to a dicision on a difficult or contentious issue.
- Direct democracy allows for decisions of this importance to be made directly by the people, or the electrorate. -It is practiced through a process called referendum.

Electorate

All the citizens in a country who are allowed to vote in an election.

Contentious

Causing or likeley to cause an argument; controversial.

Referendum

- A general vote by the electorate on a single political question which has been reffered to them for a direct decision.
- A referendum serves as a counterweight to the power of political parties in a representative democracyand to balance exerted by interes groups in a participatory democracy.
